Sew Biz Kids: November–December
Come Sew with us . . . Beginner sewers welcome!
Classes are held on the following days in the Newmarket location:
Dates: Wednesday, November 19, 26 December 3, 10, 17
Time: 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Sessions: 5
Class Fee: $108 (Plus Materials)
Recommended for Age 8 and up please.
The Sew Biz for Kids program allows the inner designer to come out and create their very own masterpiece from the initial inspiration to finished project.
In this class, students will learn the basics of choosing and caring for fabrics, pattern reading, basic sewing techniques, and machine use, all during the making of several fun and useful projects. Sewing machines will be provided for all kids’ courses.
A five week session of small projects to teach children how to use a sewing machine and develop basic hand sewing skills. Each week will focus on a different skill/project:
Week 1: Sewing Machine Basics & Making a Chicken Bean Bag.
Week 2: Bowl Cozy
Week 3: Pillow Case
Week 4: Winter Ornament
Week 5: Gift/Tote Bag
Supplies required for week 1:
- Rectangle 7 1/4" by 4" of cotton fabric, one cup of rice for fill.
- (2) small Black Buttons
- Neutral Sewing thread
- Scissors for cutting fabric
- Seam ripper
- Soft measuring tape – 60”
- Hand Sewing Needles
- Pins & pin cushion
- Cookie tin or plastic box to store supplies
Each week students will be given a supply list for the following week's class. Students need to bring supplies to each class.

I recently used the Bernina Lap Seam Foot #71 to bind a quilt, and it proved to be an excellent tool for applying binding by machine. Attaching the binding with this foot made the process far smoother than when using a stitch-in-the ditch or walking foot.
The design allows the needle to stitch right along the edge of the binding, resulting in a clean, even finish. I especially liked how securely the fabric was guided—there was far less shifting, and the binding fed neatly and evenly. The visibility around the needle area also made it easy to ensure everything stayed aligned.

I ordered around 60 different colours of solids and asked if they would put a label on each colour, so I knew the names. No problem at all. Thank you very much for that.
I didn't get a shipping message after a week, so I called the 1-800 number and spoke to a real person who checked on my order number and told me to expect a shipping notice later that week and to call back if I didn't hear from them by Friday at 4pm. By Thursday, I had a shipping notice with tracking and the sewing machine was delivered to my front door a few days later. Sewing machine works great and I would order from The Quilt Store again.
Pellon shape is great when adding stability to a sewing project.
