Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt Class
Combine a love of quilting and history in this inspiring sampler quilt class. Using the book Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt by Eleanor Burns and Sue Bouchard, you’ll explore the story of the Underground Railroad while learning to create a beautiful quilt made up of 15 traditional blocks.
Each block is inspired by patterns believed to have been part of a historic quilt code that may have helped guide enslaved people on their journey to freedom. In class, you’ll choose your favourite blocks and learn the techniques needed to piece them into a 12" sampler quilt layout with lattice sashing and a border.
You can create your quilt using traditional Civil War reproduction fabrics for an authentic look or choose modern fabrics and bright colours for a fresh interpretation. Blocks range from easy to intermediate, making this class perfect for quilters who want to expand their piecing skills while creating a meaningful quilt.
The first session will be a planning session, where students will choose their blocks, plan their quilt layout, and discuss fabric choices.
