Use a good assortment of fabrics for the best result. Avoid using stripes, plaids or directional fabrics, unless you can “ignore” the end result if they end up off center/upside down. You can make the quilt in a more controlled way by limiting the number of colours in the quilt (for example, using a variety of blue fabrics in the squares with an assortment of yellow rectangles, and navy sashings), but make sure that you use a number of different fabrics in each colour to make the quilt more interesting.
