Description

Learn the art of English paper piecing and combine hand stitching with machine quilting to create a beautiful and practical hexie notebook cover! In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn how to arrange and join 1" hexies, create a quilted cover with a contrasting lining, and finish your project with binding.

This is a wonderful project for using small amounts of your favourite quilting cottons, treasured scraps, or leftover fabrics. You’ll learn techniques that can easily be carried into future English paper piecing projects.

Fabric & Supply Requirements

  • 63 × 1" hexagon papers
  • 63 × 2¾" × 2¾" assorted quilting cotton squares
  • Batting: 10" × 13"
  • Lining fabric: 10" × 13"
  • 2 × 10" × 8" pieces of fabric for the sleeves
  • Polyester thread for hand sewing
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Quilting cotton thread suitable for machine quilting
  • Notebook measuring approximately 9" × 6"
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting ruler
  • Fabric scissors

Homework

The first class will focus on learning how to hand sew and join the hexies. No sewing machine is required for the first class. Students will have homework between sessions to complete the hexie portion of the project in preparation for the second class.

The second class will focus on assembling the notebook cover, machine quilting, and finishing the project with binding.

A sewing machine is required for the second class.

Class Schedule

This workshop is designed as two 3-hour sessions. Students should expect to complete hand-sewing homework between the two classes.
