Description

Learn the significance and teachings of a ribbon skirt while making your very own, with Indigenous sewist Carrie Benson.

This class will teach you how to properly measure your waist for a bell shape skirt, how to lay and adhere ribbons for sewing, make your waistband, add elastic, make pockets and finishing seams/hemming.

Confident beginner sewing skills required to complete class. This class is open to everyone.

Date:  Friday, September 26, 4-9pm

 

Materials Needed:

Non directional cotton fabric 42” wide
*to measure appropriate amount needed: measure around waist 1.5 times.
Example: if your waist measures 44 inches, you will need 66 inches and round up to nearest ¼ meter if needed

½ meter plain coordinating cotton

1.5 inch wide, double face satin ribbon in 4-6 coordinating colors
*measured same length as fabric.
Example: 1.75 meters of fabric will be 1.75 meters of each ribbon

1 or 1.5 inch wide elastic
*measured same width as actual waist size, round down to nearest ¼ meter if needed

1 Bodkin

1 18–24 inch ruler

4-6 coordinating threads to match ribbons

2x 8g Elmers All-purpose glue sticks or 1 sew line fabric glue pen with refills 

Sewing machine with zigzag stitch option is required

Optional for seams: Serger
